Good news for the bottled water industry, as the IBWA and the Beverage Marketing Corporation announced yesterday that the bottled water category's overall share of the refreshment beverage market held steady at 29.2% in 2009. While the beverage industry as a whole declined, primarily due to the economic recession, bottled water managed to maintain its share of the market, despite all of the recent attacks on the industry.
“During these tough economic times, consumers have trimmed discretionary spending,” says Tom Lauria, vice president of communications for IBWA, “but bottled water sales decreased less than most other major categories. Subsequently, we now enjoy steady market share as consumers choose bottled water over other packaged beverages.”

It's good to see that the recent economic difficulties have not had a significant impact on the bottled water market. While several other beverage categories declined, bottled water was able to maintain its market share, and should be in a good position to make gains in the market as the economy begins to recover. Based on this information, it looks like 2010 should be an exciting year for bottled water!
